In 2026, Australia proudly celebrates a remarkable milestone — 50 years of organised flying disc sports, dating back to the formation of the Australian Frisbee Association in 1976.
While those early years were defined by experimentation and passion in all things frisbee, disc golf in Australia has since evolved into a thriving and fast growing sport. From humble homemade baskets in local parks to professionally designed courses. From small gatherings of friends and family for local competitions to PDGA sanctioned events nationwide including majors.
Australia’s disc golf community continues to expand, with more players, more events, and greater international recognition than ever before. Australian competitors are increasingly making their mark on the global stage, while local clubs and volunteers continue to build the game from the ground up.
This 50 year anniversary is not just a reflection on where it all began, but a celebration of how far disc golf has come, and where it is headed.

Throughout 2026, a series of events, celebrations, and commemorations will take place across the country to honour this golden anniversary. These will recognise not only the history of flying disc sports including disc golf in Australia, but also the people who have contributed to its growth, from pioneers of the 1970’s to today’s dedicated players and volunteers.
We invite you to be part of the celebrations, share your stories, and help us recognise this significant moment in Australian disc sports history.
